Asphalt paving: from base preparation to the finished surface

We do not start with laying the mix. First we find out:

What load will the surface carry: cars, heavy vehicles, pedestrians?
Where will water go after rain and melting snow?
How long should the surface last, and how does it meet curbs, manholes and entrances?

Asphalt lasts a long time when the base is prepared properly. Skip this stage, and the new surface soon shows settlement, ruts and potholes. Asphalt paving is not only the top layer, but the whole structure: soil, crushed-stone base, compaction, asphalt mix and a neat junction with surrounding elements. That is why we look at the territory as a whole and pave it so that the surface:

carries the load

The surface is designed for the real load: a private yard, a residential complex parking lot and an access road to a shopping center need different thickness and composition. A properly prepared crushed-stone base and compaction keep the surface from sinking under cars. Roads and parking lots with heavy traffic need a stronger structure, pedestrian areas and yards a lighter one.

drains water

Water is the main enemy of asphalt. We build in slopes and plan drainage so puddles do not stand and water runs to gutters, grates or the lawn. The surface then suffers less in winter, when water in cracks freezes and expands. This matters for a private yard in Yerevan and for a large parking lot at a residential complex or business center alike.

looks even and neat

An even, dense surface without step-like seams and with a clean edge along curbs, lawns and walls. On large areas a paver and roller give a uniform surface, on small yard areas hand laying is used. A neat junction with manholes, gates and thresholds matters for both appearance and convenience.

fits the task

Paving a yard, parking lot, driveway, playground or the area around a building are different tasks with different requirements. We select the structure and order of work for the particular site and take into account that residents and visitors still need to use the territory. If parking markings or curb installation are needed, they can be included in one estimate.

What asphalt works are for in practice

For private owners

A driveway, a space in front of the garage, paths near the house: places where soil and gravel turn to mud after rain. Paving solves this for a long time: a clean entrance without puddles, convenient parking, a flat surface for snow removal. If a surface already exists but has potholes and cracks, asphalt repair or pothole repair can be done without replacing the whole surface.

For residential complexes and landscaping

In a residential complex the surface works every day: roads, guest parking, entrances, areas near building doors. What matters here is a single look across the whole territory, convenient slopes, clear borders with lawns and paths, and minimum inconvenience for residents during work. Paving is part of overall territory improvement, so we take curbs, storm grates and markings into account.

For shopping and business centers

The parking lot and access road are the first things a customer sees. A broken surface and puddles at the entrance spoil the impression and hinder traffic. For shopping and business centers, high load, clear parking markings, safe pedestrian crossings and work without a long shutdown of the site are important; where needed, the area is divided into stages so part of the parking lot stays available.

Do you have a specific task or dimensions?

At GlassLine we treat paving as an engineering task, not just laying mix on the ground. First we inspect the territory, assess the condition of the soil or old surface, determine the area and load, and see where the water will go. Based on this, the estimate and the order of work are prepared.

Work goes in stages: marking and base preparation, laying and compacting the crushed-stone layer, treatment with bitumen emulsion, laying the asphalt mix and rolling, finishing of edges and junctions. At each stage slopes, evenness and density are checked. We do not rush: the service life of the surface depends on the quality of every layer.
